About the piece
The Melody in F is by an enormous margin the best known thing Anton Rubinstein wrote, a simple singing tune over a rocking accompaniment that became a fixture of parlour pianos worldwide.
Rubinstein was one of the towering pianists of the century, the founder of the St Petersburg Conservatory and a composer of large-scale operas and symphonies. He came to resent being remembered for a short salon piece written in his early twenties, and history has confirmed his fear. He is no relation to the later pianist Arthur Rubinstein.

Anton Rubinstein
1829–1894
Anton Grigoryevich Rubinstein was a Russian pianist, composer and conductor who founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He was the elder brother of Nikolai Rubinstein, who founded the Moscow Conservatory.
