About the piece
Poetic melodies by Giovanni Sgambati, who studied with Liszt in Rome and became the central figure in the effort to establish instrumental music in an Italy overwhelmingly devoted to opera.
Liszt promoted him energetically, and Sgambati conducted the Italian premieres of major German works including Beethoven's Eroica, in a city where symphonic concerts were a novelty.
