About the piece
A march from Bellini's Norma, premiered at La Scala in 1831 and among the supreme achievements of Italian bel canto opera.
Extracting and arranging opera numbers for domestic piano was the principal way music circulated in the nineteenth century. Chopin admired Bellini above almost all other composers, and the long singing lines of his nocturnes owe a direct debt to Bellini's vocal writing.

Vincenzo Salvatore Carmelo Francesco Bellini was an Italian opera composer of the early Romantic era famed for his long, graceful melodies and evocative musical settings. A central figure of the bel canto era, he was admired not only by the public but also by many composers who were influenced by his work. His songs balanced florid embellishment with a deceptively simple approach to lyric setting.
