About the piece
The first of the ten books of Lyric Pieces Grieg published across four decades, sixty six miniatures in all, which became the backbone of his reputation and of nineteenth century domestic piano playing.
This opening set of eight, published in 1867, begins with the simple, songful Arietta, a melody Grieg would return to at the very end of the series: the last piece of the tenth book, Remembrances, is that same Arietta transformed into a waltz, closing the whole project in a circle.

Edvard Grieg
1843–1907
Edvard Hagerup Grieg was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is widely considered one of the leading Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide. His use of Norwegian folk music in his own compositions brought the music of Norway to fame, as well as helping to develop a national identity, much as Jean Sibelius did in Finland and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia.
