About the piece
A military fantasy, belonging to the battle piece, a genre enormously popular during the Napoleonic wars in which the piano depicted trumpet calls, cannon fire, cavalry charges and the eventual victory hymn.
Beethoven's Wellington's Victory is the most famous surviving example, and it is far from his best work. The genre died with the era that produced it.
The composer
Daniel Steibelt
1765–1823
Daniel Gottlieb Steibelt was a German pianist and composer. His main works were composed in Paris and in London, and he died in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He once challenged and lost to Ludwig van Beethoven in a piano duel.
