About the piece
The Venetian Regatta, a nocturne from Rossini's Soirees musicales, describing a gondola race through the swaying rhythm of a barcarolle.
Venice and its boat songs were a persistent subject for nineteenth century composers, and Rossini, an Italian living in Paris, supplied the fashion from the inside. Liszt made a piano transcription of this number among others from the set.

Gioacchino Rossini
1792–1868
Gioachino Antonio Rossini was an Italian composer and conductor of the late Classical and early Romantic eras. While he gained most of his fame for his 39 operas, he also wrote many pieces of chamber music, piano, and some sacred music. He set new standards for both comic and serious opera before retiring from large-scale composition while still in his thirties, at the height of his popularity.
