About the piece

A gondolier's song in the rocking barcarolle rhythm, a form Italian composers had particular claim to and which spread across European music of the period. Sgambati is now remembered chiefly for a transcription rather than an original work: his piano arrangement of the Melodie from Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice remains far better known than anything he composed.
