About the piece
The Cat's Fugue, a nickname attached in the nineteenth century to Scarlatti's sonata K. 30 because its fugue subject leaps about in wide, irregular intervals, as though a cat had walked across the keyboard.
The story of the actual cat is almost certainly invented, but the subject really is strange: it climbs by awkward, unpredictable steps in a way no ordinary fugue theme does. Scarlatti wrote over five hundred single-movement sonatas, most of them for the Spanish court.

Domenico Scarlatti
1685–1757
Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti was an Italian composer. He is classified primarily as a Baroque composer chronologically, although his music was influential in the development of the Classical style. Like his famous father Alessandro Scarlatti, he composed in a variety of musical forms, although today he is known mainly for his 555 keyboard sonatas. He spent much of his life in the service of the Portuguese and Spanish royal families.
