About the piece
Jocelyn is an opera Godard premiered in 1888, based on a narrative poem by Lamartine about a seminarian who shelters a young fugitive during the French Revolution.
The opera itself vanished from the stage, but its Berceuse became one of the most played encores of the following century, arranged for violin, cello, voice and every other conceivable medium. It is a familiar situation: a composer remembered entirely for four minutes of a work nobody performs.

Benjamin Godard

Benjamin Louis Paul Godard was a French violinist and Romantic-era composer of Jewish extraction, best known for his opera Jocelyn. Godard composed eight operas, five symphonies, two piano and two violin concertos, string quartets, sonatas for violin and piano, piano pieces and etudes, and more than a hundred songs. He died at the age of 45 in Cannes (Alpes-Maritimes) of tuberculosis and was buried in the family tomb in Taverny in the French department of Val-d'Oise.
