About the piece
The Secret Marriage, premiered in Vienna in 1792, and the subject of the most extraordinary encore in operatic history: Emperor Leopold II enjoyed it so much that after supper he had the entire opera performed again the same evening.
Cimarosa was among the most successful opera composers in Europe in the 1780s and 1790s, working in Naples, St Petersburg and Vienna. He later fell foul of the Neapolitan authorities for supporting the short-lived republic of 1799 and was imprisoned.

Domenico Cimarosa

Domenico Cimarosa was an Italian composer of the Neapolitan School and of the Classical period. He wrote more than eighty operas, the best known of which is Il matrimonio segreto (1792); most of his operas are comedies. He also wrote instrumental works and church music.
