About the piece
One of the middle numbers in Liszt's set of nineteen Hungarian Rhapsodies, composed in the 1840s and 1850s. It follows the familiar two-part shape of the series, a slow, brooding opening giving way to a faster, more brilliant close, imitating the sound of a Hungarian Roma band.
Less often performed than the famous second or sixth rhapsodies, it nonetheless carries the same fiery character that made the series a sensation with nineteenth century audiences.

Franz Liszt was a Hungarian composer, virtuoso pianist, conductor and teacher of the Romantic period. With a diverse body of work spanning more than six decades, he is considered to be one of the most prolific and influential composers of his era, and his piano works continue to be widely performed and recorded.
