About the piece
One of the most technically ferocious of Liszt's nineteen Hungarian Rhapsodies, composed in the 1840s and 1850s. Its final section demands extremely rapid octave passages at full speed, placing it among the hardest of the entire set to perform.
Like its companions, it draws on the verbunkos style of Hungarian Roma bands, moving from a stately opening into music of dazzling, propulsive display.
