About the piece
Subtitled Heroide-elegiaque, Heroic Elegy, this is one of the more somber entries in Liszt's set of nineteen Hungarian Rhapsodies, composed in the 1840s and 1850s. Rather than building to a blazing friska finale like many of its companions, it maintains a slow, funeral-march gravity throughout.
Its darker character sets it apart from the exuberant showpieces, such as the second and sixth rhapsodies, that made the series famous.
