About the piece
Six studies transcribing Paganini's violin music for piano, published in 1851. Liszt had heard Paganini play in Paris in 1832 and was so shaken by the experience that he withdrew to practise obsessively, determined to become the equivalent phenomenon on his own instrument.
The set includes La Campanella, the most famous of all his showpieces. This 1851 version is a revision of an earlier 1838 set that was so extravagantly difficult as to be very nearly unplayable, even by Liszt's standards.
