About the piece
A concerto by Daniel Steibelt, whose enormous popularity around 1800 rested on spectacular effects, above all the storm movements built on rolling tremolos that audiences found thrilling and other musicians found vulgar.
His third concerto, containing such a storm, was among the most popular pieces in Europe for a period, and its success shaped concert programming well beyond his own career.
The composer
Daniel Steibelt
1765–1823
Daniel Gottlieb Steibelt was a German pianist and composer. His main works were composed in Paris and in London, and he died in Saint Petersburg, Russia. He once challenged and lost to Ludwig van Beethoven in a piano duel.
