About the piece
A grand fantasy combining two British patriotic anthems, written with the London public firmly in view. Thalberg performed in Britain repeatedly and to great acclaim.
Building a showpiece from the national tunes of whichever country one was touring was a standard virtuoso strategy of the era, guaranteed to bring an audience to its feet, and Liszt did much the same thing on his own travels.
