About the piece
La Campanella, meaning "the little bell," is the third of Liszt's Grandes etudes de Paganini, revised into its familiar form in 1851 from an earlier, even harder 1838 version. It reworks the bell-like rondo finale of Paganini's Second Violin Concerto into one of the most fearsome showpieces in the piano repertoire.
The right hand leaps across huge distances to ring out bell-like high notes again and again, testing accuracy and stamina to the limit. It is as thrilling to watch as it is to hear.
