About the piece

In a Boat, the opening movement of Debussy's Petite Suite of 1889 and by far its most popular number, frequently extracted and arranged for other forces. Its gently rocking accompaniment and floating melody evoke a small boat on calm water, a barcarolle in all but name, and the piece has become one of the standard introductions to Debussy for intermediate players.

Achille Claude Debussy was a French composer, born in Saint-Germain-en-Laye. He is sometimes seen as the first Impressionist composer, although he vigorously rejected the term. He was among the most influential composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
