About the piece
The third and by far most famous of Liszt's six Consolations, composed around 1849 and 1850. A calm, singing melody floats over a gently rocking left hand, a texture taken almost directly from Chopin's nocturne in the same key of D♭ major.
Liszt wrote it in the period following Chopin's death in 1849, and it is generally heard as a tribute. It is also one of the few genuinely approachable pieces in his output, making it many pianists' first encounter with his music.
