Variations on The Blue Bells of Scotland, a folk song widely known across the English-speaking world, and exactly the kind of piece on which Herz built his commercial success. The formula was reliable: take a melody the audience already loves, decorate it with increasingly brilliant figuration, and let the listener enjoy both the familiarity and the display. Almost every touring virtuoso of the period had a stack of such pieces ready.
