About the piece

A seasonal character piece by a composer who spent years as Liszt's assistant at Weimar, copying scores and, by some accounts, contributing substantially to the orchestration of several Liszt works. The exact extent of that contribution remains disputed and was a sore point between the two men. Raff later established an independent career and ended it as director of the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt, where he hired Clara Schumann to teach piano.
