About the piece
Invitation to the Dance, composed in 1819 and generally regarded as the first waltz written for the concert hall rather than the ballroom. Weber gave his wife a detailed program: a gentleman approaches a lady, she declines, he presses, she accepts, they converse, they dance, and at the end he thanks her and withdraws.
The opening and closing passages represent that conversation, framing the dance itself. Berlioz orchestrated the piece in 1841 for a Paris production of Der Freischutz, and it is in that version that most listeners now know it.

Carl Maria von Weber

Carl Maria Friedrich Ernst von Weber was a German composer, conductor, virtuoso pianist, guitarist, and critic in the late Classical and early Romantic eras. Best known for his operas, he was a crucial figure in the development of German Romantische Oper.
