About the piece
Originally the slow movement of the Waldstein Sonata, removed when friends told Beethoven the sonata ran too long, and published on its own in 1805.
It became one of his most popular pieces in his lifetime, and he played it so frequently in Viennese salons that the nickname Andante favori, the favourite andante, attached itself to the piece and stuck. Its removal is why the Waldstein has only a brief Introduzione where a full slow movement would be expected.
