About the piece
A piano version of Ascher's song Alice, Where Art Thou?, one of the most popular parlour songs of the Victorian era, published in 1861 and reprinted for decades.
The song and its piano arrangements sold in enormous quantities, and pieces like it represent the commercial heart of nineteenth century music publishing far more accurately than the concert repertoire does.

Joseph Simon Ascher was a Dutch-Jewish composer and pianist. He lived in Paris and London for most of his life.
