About the piece
The Poor Orphan Child, sixth in the Album for the Young, is the first genuinely sad piece a student encounters in the collection.
Schumann never condescends to his young players. A child able to manage only a few notes is nonetheless given something with real feeling in it to shape, and this quiet minor-key lament is a lesson in expression as much as in technique.

Robert Schumann
1810–1856
Robert Schumann was a German composer, pianist, and music critic of the early Romantic era. He composed in all the main musical genres of the time, writing for solo piano, voice and piano, chamber groups, orchestra, choir and the opera. His works typify the spirit of the Romantic era in German music.
