About the piece

First Loss, sixteenth in the Album for the Young, and one of the best known pieces in it. A short, plain melody in E minor conveys a child's first real experience of sadness without a trace of sentimentality. It is among the clearest demonstrations of what separates Schumann's collection from ordinary teaching material: the emotional subject is treated seriously, at a technical level a young beginner can actually manage.
