About the piece
Knecht Ruprecht, twelfth in the Album for the Young. The title names a figure from German Christmas folklore, the dark companion of Saint Nicholas who deals with badly behaved children while Nicholas rewards the good.
The music is suitably fierce, stamping along in A minor with sudden accents, before a gentler major-key middle section and a final scurrying departure. It is one of the most vivid character pieces in the collection.
