About the piece
Melody, the piece that opens Schumann's Album for the Young, composed in 1848. It is deliberately the simplest thing in the collection: a plain tune in the right hand over quiet chords, with no technical obstacle at all.
Schumann arranged the album so that difficulty increases gradually, and this opening number is designed to be playable almost immediately by a beginner while still being genuine music rather than an exercise.
