About the piece
Heller's own Album for the Young, written in open emulation of Schumann's Op. 68, which had established the genre and which Heller admired greatly.
Schumann's collection prompted a whole century of imitations, from Tchaikovsky and Gurlitt to Bartok, all built on the same principle: that music written for children to play should be real music rather than simplified exercises.
The composer
Stephen Heller
1813–1888
Stephen Heller was a Hungarian pianist, teacher, and composer whose career spanned the period from Schumann to Bizet. Heller was an influence for later Romantic composers. He outlived his reputation, and was a near-forgotten figure at his death in 1888.
