About the piece
A collection named for Peterhof, the imperial palace complex outside St Petersburg famous for its fountains and gardens.
Rubinstein's career was closely tied to the Russian court: the Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna was his patron, and her support was essential to the founding of the St Petersburg Conservatory in 1862, the institution that professionalized musical training in Russia and shaped every Russian composer who followed.

Anton Rubinstein
1829–1894
Anton Grigoryevich Rubinstein was a Russian pianist, composer and conductor who founded the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. He was the elder brother of Nikolai Rubinstein, who founded the Moscow Conservatory.
