About the piece
A set built on a Russian folk melody, moving from a slow introduction through variations to a brilliant closing rondo, a shape common in the early nineteenth century when audiences enjoyed hearing a familiar tune transformed.
Russian themes were fashionable across Europe following the Napoleonic wars, and composers from Beethoven to Hummel worked them into pieces aimed at both the concert platform and the drawing room.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel
1778–1837
Johann Nepomuk Hummel was an Austrian composer and pianist. His music reflects the transition from the Classical to the Romantic musical era. He was among Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri’s best students. He also studied under Joseph Haydn. Hummel significantly influenced later piano music of the nineteenth century, particularly in the works of Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, and Felix Mendelssohn.
