About the piece
Six sonatinas that form, with the Op. 20 set, the backbone of Kuhlau's reputation. Generations of piano students have worked through them on the way from beginner pieces toward the Haydn and Mozart sonatas proper.
Kuhlau composed a great deal else, including operas and a large body of flute music that earned him lasting fame among flautists, but it is these teaching pieces that kept his name alive in the piano world.

Friedrich Kuhlau
1786–1832
Friedrich Daniel Rudolf Kuhlau, sometimes written as Frederick Kulav, was a Danish pianist and composer during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. He was a central figure of the Danish Golden Age and is immortalized in Danish cultural history through his music for Elves' Hill, the first true work of Danish National Romanticism and a concealed tribute to the absolute monarchy.
