About the piece
Four dances composed in 1880 for piano four hands, drawing their melodies from Ludvig Mathias Lindeman's published collections of Norwegian folk tunes.
Grieg used Lindeman's collections repeatedly as source material. The dances take the rhythms of traditional Norwegian forms, including the halling and the leaping springar, and became among his most popular works in both the duet original and the later orchestration.

Edvard Grieg
1843–1907
Edvard Hagerup Grieg was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is widely considered one of the leading Romantic era composers, and his music is part of the standard classical repertoire worldwide. His use of Norwegian folk music in his own compositions brought the music of Norway to fame, as well as helping to develop a national identity, much as Jean Sibelius did in Finland and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia.
