About the piece
The last piano music Brahms published, composed in 1893. He sent the opening B minor Intermezzo to Clara Schumann describing it as teeming with dissonance and asking her to play it very slowly, saying every bar and every note must sound as if ritardando were intended.
Clara replied that the piece was a grey pearl, veiled and very precious. The set ends with a defiant E♭ major Rhapsody, the last outward gesture in a body of late piano music otherwise turned almost entirely inward.
The composer
Johannes Brahms
1833–1897
Johannes Brahms was a German composer, pianist, and conductor of the mid-Romantic period. His music features expressive counterpoint, freer dissonance, rhythmic vitality, and traditional forms. His works include four symphonies, four concertos, a Requiem, much chamber music, and hundreds of folk-song arrangements and Lieder.
