Twenty four studies of expression and rhythm, the title stating exactly what Heller considered the neglected half of piano training.
His conviction, unusual among nineteenth century pedagogues, was that rhythmic subtlety and expressive shaping should be taught alongside finger technique rather than after it, and these pieces put that principle into practice.

Stephen Heller
1813–1888
Stephen Heller was a Hungarian pianist, teacher, and composer whose career spanned the period from Schumann to Bizet. Heller was an influence for later Romantic composers. He outlived his reputation, and was a near-forgotten figure at his death in 1888.
