Fifteen virtuoso studies, subtitled Per aspera ad astra, through hardship to the stars, and the work by which Moszkowski is still best known to pianists. They occupy a rare position: demanding enough to serve as genuine technical preparation for the concert repertoire, yet attractive enough to be programmed in recital on their own merits. Paderewski said that after Chopin, no one understood how to write for the piano as Moszkowski did.
