When Should You Practice? The Science Behind Optimal Practice Times

Finding the right time to practice can make a real difference in how productive your sessions are and how much you retain. But is there actually a "best" time of day to practice music? Recent research gives us some fascinating insights.

Your Body's Natural Rhythms

Our bodies operate on circadian rhythms that create natural peaks and valleys in performance throughout the day. One key finding: body temperature rises through the day and typically peaks in late afternoon or early evening, which corresponds with peaks in alertness and muscle efficiency.

Studies consistently show that physical performance and fine motor skills are better later in the day. Research on strength, accuracy, and speed across various tasks reveals that performance in late afternoon (roughly 4-7 PM) is consistently superior to early morning. For musicians, this means finger agility, coordination, and technical precision may naturally peak in the later part of the day.

But cognitive performance follows a different pattern. Tasks involving memory and complex reasoning often improve from morning to around midday or early afternoon, then decline. In one classic study, participants performed logic-based tasks faster as the morning progressed, peaking around 1-2 PM before speed and accuracy dropped off significantly. Tasks with strong memory or analytical components benefit from the higher focus of earlier hours.

Matching Practice Type to Time of Day

Since music involves both physical and mental elements, you can strategically schedule different practice activities:

Late afternoon/evening (4-7 PM) is ideal for:

  • Technical exercises
  • Fast scales and difficult passages
  • Full repertoire run-throughs
  • Physically demanding practice

Research shows that finger tapping and rhythmic motor tasks reach maximum tempo in late afternoon when heart rate and arousal are naturally higher. Muscle strength, fine motor precision, and overall sensorimotor speed tend to peak during this window.

Morning/early afternoon (9 AM-2 PM) works best for:

  • Score study and analysis
  • Memorization work
  • Learning new pieces
  • Mental rehearsal

Studies indicate that working memory and analytical reasoning show best performance in the first several hours after waking. The larger the memory component of a task, the earlier in the day performance tends to peak.

The Chronotype Factor

Here's where individual differences become crucial. Your chronotype—whether you're a "morning lark" or "night owl"—significantly affects your optimal practice time.

Research on musicians shows they naturally schedule practice according to their chronotype. A 2021 study found that chronotype was a significant predictor of when musicians chose to make music each day, independent of actual sleep hours.

More importantly, chronotype affects how well you perform at different times. In an experiment with pianists, night owls performed scales more steadily in the evening than morning, while early birds showed more stable execution in the morning than evening. Each group played best at their preferred time of day.

Interestingly, when researchers studied conservatory-level pianists, the average practice midpoint was around 4:48 PM, suggesting serious musicians naturally gravitate toward late afternoon or early evening. The study found a strong correlation between earlier sleep timing and earlier daily practice—musicians intuitively practice when they feel most alert and capable.

Sleep and Memory Consolidation

Practice timing also affects learning and retention through sleep-based memory consolidation—the process by which skills solidify after initial learning.

A striking 2023 study examined finger-tapping skills practiced at different times of day. Participants who trained around 8 PM showed significant performance improvement the next day after sleep. Those who trained at 10 AM actually got worse by the next day, forgetting some of what they learned. The afternoon group (3 PM) stayed about the same.

Practicing closer to bedtime led to greater skill retention because newly learned motor memory was consolidated during sleep soon after practice. Early-day practice meant a long interval of wakefulness before sleep, during which forgetting occurred.

This aligns with earlier music research. A 2006 study had musicians learn a piano melody and compared those who slept between sessions to those who didn't. Sleep greatly enhanced accuracy and evenness of playing. Interestingly, time of day didn't significantly affect immediate performance—students played equally well in morning and evening sessions. The real improvements emerged after sleep.

Practical takeaway: Schedule important practice sessions so sleep comes shortly afterward. Evening practice followed by a full night's rest leverages your brain's natural overnight processing to lock in what you've practiced.

The Bottom Line

Based on research evidence, late afternoon to early evening (approximately 4-7 PM) makes a strong case as optimal practice time for many musicians.

However, "optimal" differs for each individual. A morning-loving musician might find 9 AM-12 PM their golden hours, and research confirms early chronotypes truly do perform better earlier in the day. Night owls might only hit their stride late at night.
